Earl Bennett
Idaho Mining Historian | Idaho State Historical Society
Earl Bennett is a retired State Geologist and former Dean of the College of Mines and Earth Resources and the College of Science at the University of Idaho. After serving honorably in the U.S. Air Force, Bennett received degrees in geology from the University of Delaware (BA, 1968), N.C. State at Raleigh, NC (MS, 1970) and the University of Idaho (PhD, 1973). Earl began working with the Idaho Geological Survey at the University of Idaho in 1973. He became the Associate Director in 1986 and State Geologist in 1989. In 1997, he was appointed Dean of the College of Mines and Earth Resources at UI and the first Dean of the new College of Science established in July 2002.
During his career Dr. Bennett published several hundred papers, generated over $5 million in research funds and made hundreds of presentations about Idaho’s geology and mineral resources. In 2003, he was honored as a life member of the Northwest Mining Association.
Retiring as an Emeritus Professor in Geology in 2003, he continues to interact with the state’s mining sector as a consultant and speaker. He specializes in the mining history of the Coeur d’Alene Mining District and other mining camps. He currently sits on the boards of the Latah County Historical Society and the Idaho State Historical Society and serves as the Genesee City Historian.

Virginia Gillerman
Research Geologist | Idaho Geological Survey
Virginia (Ginna) is an economic geologist and research geologist with the Idaho Geological Survey (part of the University of Idaho). Ginna received a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, and her undergraduate degree from Carleton College. She started her career in mineral deposits with AMAX Exploration, working in the Railroad Mining District of Elko County, Nevada. After grad school she spent five years in mineral exploration with Anaconda Minerals Company in Reno, exploring for gold and polymetallic deposits in Utah, Nevada and Alaska. Following a year of teaching back at Carleton College, she returned to Nevada as a contract geologist working mostly on gold exploration for several major companies.
In 1989, she moved to Boise to staff a new one-person satellite office for the Survey. She learned about Idaho mining from Dr. Earl Bennett, then the State Geologist, and was given the task of preparing the annual review of Idaho’s mining industry. With the IGS, she has had multiple responsibilities, including answering public inquiries on ore deposits and the geology of southwestern Idaho, the annual mining and exploration review (typically presented at the AEMA/Northwest Mining Association meeting), and conducting research on mineral deposits and related geology. Specific projects have included geologic mapping in the Mayfield, Hagerman, and De Lamar areas of southern Idaho, inventories of abandoned and inactive mines on public lands, research on geology and geochronology of rare earth and thorium deposits in the Lemhi Pass District, Idaho-Montana, research on gold-antimony deposits in the Stibnite Mining District of central Idaho, and characterization of aggregate suitability for highway concrete. She is also an affiliate faculty at Boise State University and taught an occasional course in past years.
